At one month pregnant, you have actually only been pregnant for about two weeks. This is because the number of weeks in your pregnancy starts from the date of your last menstrual cycle instead of the actual date of ovulation or conception. According to the Office on Women’s Health, symptoms of pregnancy can start as early as one week after conception.

First month pregnancy symptoms can be a pain, literally, for some women. Luckily the first month of being pregnant is also a surprising and exciting time, which can help to make up for any problematic symptoms.


During the fourth week of pregnancy, you will notice your period is absent. However, you may notice slight spotting approximately six to 12 days after conception. This spotting is called implantation bleeding, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Implantation bleeding may occur around the same time as when you expect your period. Around the time of your missed period, you can take a pregnancy test, which may come back positive; however, if the test is negative and you believe you are pregnant, either visit your doctor or wait about a week and take a new test.


Pregnancy, even at one month, causes aches and pains. Your breasts may be tender and slightly swollen, and you may have a headache or backache. When you add pregnancy-related fatigue in with these aches and pains, you may feel even worse.


You can read all the pregnancy books and articles known to man about pregnancy symptoms, but when you get right down to it, you’re an individual and so are your pregnancy symptoms. There are some factors that can offer clues as to which early signs of pregnancy you may experience, but overall, no one can know how their body will respond to a pregnancy.

Some factors that may influence your first month of symptoms might include:

  • The symptoms your own mother or a sister experienced while pregnant.
  • Symptoms you experienced during a previous pregnancy.
  • Your overall health and fitness level.
  • If you’re carrying multiples or a single baby.
  • Your stress level – especially as it relates to this pregnancy.
  • The above factors may make a difference for your symptoms; then again, your body might surprise you.



Following are some basic first month pregnancy symptoms. To make sure that none of the symptoms you experience become problematic in the long run, you need to make sure you receive early and ongoing prenatal care. Some pregnancy symptoms may indicate a larger issue or a dangerous but preventable issue. However, you won’t know which symptoms are part of a larger issue unless you’re seeing a health care provider.


You hear about morning sickness often and it is a symptom you may experience early on, but you also might skip it altogether. A classic sign of morning sickness is feeling nausea when your blood sugar level is low. Since low blood sugar often occurs in the morning when your stomach is empty, many women experience this nausea as “morning sickness.”

But, morning sickness can occur at any time. Low blood sugar may be the largest trigger, but greasy food smells, cigarette smoke, automobile fumes, and tiredness can all cause nausea. To help prevent this icky feeling, try eating small snacks throughout the day so your blood sugar stays balanced. It’s even a good move to leave a box of crackers by your bed so you can have a snack first thing in the morning. Ginger tea, ginger lolly pops, and ginger eaten plain or in food can all help ease nausea.


Your body is working harder than ever before while you’re pregnant. There are massive metabolic changes occurring, emotions are flying high or low, or both, and nausea can drain you. All in all, this adds up to a whole lot of tired.

The level of tired you feel can depend on your general health, so be sure to eat well and get in some safe pregnancy exercise. If you have other kids, another pregnancy can be especially tiring because you’re already caring for others in a big way. If you need it, ask for extra help from a friend or family member who can help with chores and kids a few hours a week. You may need to take a couple of days off from work or try a nice early bedtime. Let household chores slack a little during this first month of pregnancy.

It’s frustrating to be so tired when you’re also excited about a new pregnancy, but this extreme tiredness tends to vanish during the second trimester.




Breast changes are usually the most obvious of the first month pregnancy symptoms. Unlike tiredness and nausea, which vary wildly from woman to woman, almost all women experience some sort of breast changes. The symptoms of breast changes can include soreness and pain, but theses symptoms tend to go away quickly – they mainly feel like the breast symptoms you experience before your period.

Other changes you’ll notice is a darkening of the areola (the area around your nipple) along with the little bumps on the areola becoming more prominent. Neither of these two symptoms are anything to be concerned about. You may also notice the veins on your chest becoming more obvious, which is also perfectly normal.
